1 Gallon Project Tips (Jeep Tubs and 6 ft Pickups)

If you’ve purchased a 1 gallon kit for a jeep tub or 6 ft pickup bed you will be working within a 6 to 8 hour pot life to complete 2 coats from the same can. 1 gallon of Monstaliner covers approximately 60 sq ft in 2 coats. Work neat, don’t waste coating and do not apply the 1st coat too heavy. Most of your texture and film thickness will happen during the 2nd coat. Concentrate on covering all surfaces with a thin, even 1st coat and conserve material for the next coat. SEE THROUGH,

Towards the end of your 1st coat, do not pour too much coating into the roller pan at once. You want to avoid having to return used coating from the roller pan back to the original can which could accelerate the remaining pot life of the unused material. Use only a narrow roller tray as the wide trays used to paint your house requires that your pour too much material in the tray to wet the roller. Also more surface area of coating exposed to the air in a large tray can start to skin over and make chunks in your final finish. Keep the lid on the can loosely while working and NEVER leave a can of Monstaliner sitting open to the air for more time than it takes to pour more coating into the roller pan and NEVER WORK DIRECTLY FROM THE CAN.

At the end of the first coat, scrape down inside walls of can (with what?) and pour 2 to 3 ounces (4 to 6 tablespoons) of MEK or Acetone over the surface of the remaining material in the can. This is called a “solvent float” and will prevent any skin from forming on the surface between coats. Close the lid tightly between coats.

When you begin your 2nd coat, open the can and check carefully for any skinning in the can and scoop out if necessary. DO NOT REMIX COATING BEFORE CHECKING FOR SKIN OR RISKGETTING LUMPS IN YOUR FINAL COAT. Stir the floating solvent into the coating and re-power mix the contents.

It’s completely normal for Monstaliner to thicken slightly or even significantly when sitting between coats. The coating is still 100% usable. Just re-power mix and add a few ounces of MEK or Acetone if desired which will facilitate easier rolling and gain some additional coverage. DO NOT OVERTHIN! You can always add more but not take it out.
